First Grade
WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE
The first grade teaching team welcomes you to Forest View. We are committed to providing our first grade students with a quality education.
Reading: Forest View first graders use the Reading Street reading program. Students learn how to decode words, use phonic skills, and develop a sight word vocabulary to help them become successful readers. Students are introduced to a wide variety of quality literature. Listening, speaking, writing, spelling, and viewing are included in the reading program.
Math: First graders study number awareness, problem solving, computation, and calendar skills. A "hands on" approach to mathematics is practiced daily.
Computers: Computer skills are introduced and reinforced in the lab.
Science: Students will learn about motion and balance.
Art: Children will be introduced to the following art concepts: space, line, shape, texture, and color.
Social Studies: Social Studies encompasses families, homes, communities, celebrations, social skill building, and current events.
Specialists help to enrich the first grade learning experience with music, physical education, and media.
